The HTML color code is coded as a 6-digit color code where each pair of digits represents one of the RGB (Red-Green-Blue) colors. The value for each pair can range from 00 to FF. When the 3 pairs of color codes are combined, a color emerges. For example a color code of "#0000FF" represents the BLUE color. For this color code, the Red color code has the value of 00, the Green color code has the value of 00, and the Blue color code has the value of FF. An HTML color code of "#000000" represents black while a color code of "#FFFFFF" represents white. There are only 216 colors that are considered safe for web browsers. Browser-safe colors can only contain 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, and FF values in each of the paired digits of the RGB spectrum.
Although all 16,777,216 (256 x 256 x 256) possible hex values are supported by HTML, they will only display accurately if the user's screen supports 24-bit true color, in our above example we only displayed the 216 (6 x 6 x 6) primary colors (thereby missed to display another 16,777,000 colors for you to see, we are sorry about this inconvenience). |

RGB Color Space The RGB color space is known as a "hardware-oriented" color space. It exists because hardware, such as your computer monitor, needs to know how to display the color on the screen. The R, G, and B values correspond to the relative strengths of the red, green, and blue guns in the CRT. Here, on the illustrated image on the left, we can see how red, green and blue are combined to make other colors.
Red, green, and blue are known as primary colors - they can be combined to make any other color. For example, red and green combines to make yellow. While RGB may be perfect for hardware, it's not an intuitive color space for picking colors because humans don't think of complex colors (such as vermilion) as combinations of primary colors. |
